Notes from a presentation by Karl Schlotterbeck on mental illness in schools.

Depression has doubled in nearly every generation since the 1920's.

20% of kids with diagnoses get treatment; most of this is in school.

Anxiety can show up as recurrent physical symptoms: headache, need to use the bathroom...

An overload of information creates either anxiety or depression.

More Vietnam vets died by suicide after the war than died in the war.

Book by David Walsh: Why Do They Act That Way? addresses hormones in teens.

Anam Cara means soul friend.

Success is 1/3 talent and ability; 2/3 ability to work with others.

When talking to students the ratio of positive comments to negative comments should be 4 to 1. Use strong compliments with no good or bad, "I can really read that" or "You worked really hard on that."

Say things while students are working; don't wait until they are done.

Describe what you see.

One out of five students has a diagnosable mental disorder.
